We have receive a lot of feedback from elected officials and other observers that our regular and consistent attendance and messaging at City Council is making a difference and is forcing elected official to pay attention to our concerns.
It's working! But we need fresh faces and fresh voices to join us.
And now, once per month, City Council will host its public comments session at 6 PM in the evening, which will hopefully make it easier.
Remember: they work for US - not the other way around! Go in and tell them to do their job!
Public comment sessions are on Tuesdays at 2 PM, except for the 4th Tuesday of the month, which will start at 6 PM.
You must sign up by 3 PM the Monday prior at speakers@houstontx.gov.
Let them know if you wish to speak for 1 minute, 2 minutes, or 3 minutes. (Note: there is a big benefit to selecting 1 or 2 minutes, because you will get to speak earlier and get in their minds while they're still fresh!)
Try these talking points:
Open with your request: "Please DENY the Abandonment of Polk Street."
Personal Story: Tell how you use Polk Street. Tell them how often. Make it personal to You. Use it for work daily? Drove Polk to get to St. Joseph Hospital? Ride the bus to/from events? Let them know it will affect You and that it matters.
Transparency: Before public outcry the comment process for this project closed March 3rd. Houston First plans for the Polk release March 6th. How is the public supposed to know what to comment on before the plans are released? This smacks of backroom dealing and public sacrifice for private gain.
