The City of Houston is collecting public comments on the Polk abandonment through its "Joint Referral Committee" (JRC) process. All you have to do is call or email, leave your name and phone number, and state that you "oppose the abandonment of Polk.
Call: 832-395-3118
Email: jrcinfo@houstontx.gov
Public comments along won't be sufficient. However, getting as many names registered as possible helps support all of our numerous other efforts!
Speak at City Council, and tell your elected officials in person that you oppose the abandonment of Polk. This can have an outsized impact, because the officials know that it takes a lot of effort for each speaker. We have several veterans who would be happy to accompany you, prepare a speech, and figure out the logistics. Let us know!
Public comment sessions are on Tuesdays at 2 PM. You must sign up by 3 PM the Monday before at speakers@houstontx.gov.
We send out regular emails to interested individuals about opportunities related to saving Polk and having a voice in the decisions that impact us. We also have many activities planned, and we need all the help we can get!
Let your local elected officials know that you oppose the closure of Polk by calling or emailing them directly. For ideas of what you can say, check out the sidebar at right.

Try these talking points:
Open with your request: "Please DENY the Abandonment of Polk Street."
Personal Story: Tell how you use Polk Street. Tell them how often. Make it personal to You. Use it for work daily? Drove Polk to get to St. Joseph Hospital? Ride the bus to/from events? Let them know it will affect You and that it matters.
JRC Process: This process is not appropriate for a project of this size. It's mostly for alleyways and dead-ends, Polk is a major collector and a main East-West connector into and out of Downtown.
Transparency: Before public outcry the comment process for this project closed March 3rd. Houston First plans for the Polk release March 6th. How is the public supposed to know what to comment on before the plans are released? This smacks of backroom dealing and public sacrifice for private gain.
Traffic: No traffic study has been done regarding the results of this abandonment. We want an in-depth study of this plan and how it will effect ALL traffic, not just cars, traveling Polk Street and the areas nearby.
